What can't go in a dumpster

Rental companies ban some items because landfills and transfer stations refuse them, and a banned item found in the load can mean an extra fee. Here is where the usual ones go instead, with local options for Albany.

Item by item

  • Paint, stain and varnishPaintCare runs year-round drop-off sites across New York for house paint, primer, stain, sealer and clear finishes, with no charge at drop-off. Its map lists the nearest store.
  • Household chemicalsPool chemicals, solvents, pesticides and similar products. The city of Albany holds collection events at the Rapp Road landfill for city households, with pre-registration required. No more are planned for 2026; ask Albany Recycles at 518-427-7480 about the next ones.
  • ElectronicsNew York law has kept TVs, computers and similar items out of the trash since 2015. City of Albany households can drop electronics at General Services, 1 Richard Conners Boulevard, weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with ID.
  • Rechargeable batteriesThrowing them in the trash is illegal in New York. Stores that sell them must accept up to ten a day from anyone. Tape the ends first.
  • TiresTire shops in New York must take back as many old tires as you buy new. In the city, tires can also go to the curb as a scheduled white-goods pickup.
  • Fridges, freezers and air conditionersAppliances that hold refrigerant are usually refused in containers. Albany collects them at the curb after a call to General Services at (518) 427-7480; state law says doors come off first.
  • Propane tanks and fuelPressurized cylinders and gasoline are a fire risk in a compactor. Return tanks to a refill or exchange point and ask the company about anything that held fuel.

Also worth asking about

  • Mattresses and box springs, which some companies accept for an added fee
  • Anything you think might contain asbestos, such as old pipe wrap or some floor tile
  • Railroad ties and treated lumber
  • Large amounts of liquid, including half-full paint cans
  • Medical sharps and medicines

Every company keeps its own list, shaped by the disposal sites it uses. Read it out on the call if you're unsure about something specific.

Book a roll-off for your Albany address

Pick up the phone with three things in mind: the debris, the drop spot and your dates. A locally run, independent roll-off company picks up, recommends a container and quotes a drop-off day and a total.

This number is for rentals, not trash pickup. Albany's regular trash and recycling are handled by the city's Department of General Services.
